Campaign for air and noise, for a better living environment in Kortrijk
You tackle the following challenges:
Measurement campaign
Kortrijk wants to improve the quality of life in Hoog Kortrijk and Kortrijk-Oost. In order to better coordinate spatial development, mobility and infrastructure works, the City of Kortrijk, with the support of the VMM, has carried out measurements of the air quality. And this via an air quality campaign. Citizens could make gardens and facades available, but measurements were also taken in public areas and at schools. The Department of Environment is the driving force behind this campaign, in which noise measurements are also carried out.
Air measurements
For 15 months, from October 2021 to December 2022, the city of Kortrijk measured nitrogen dioxide in the air at 33 locations. This was a collaboration between the VMM on the one hand and the Department of Environment, the city of Harelbeke, the city of Kortrijk, the municipality of Zwevegem and the intermunicipal Leiedal on the other.
Sound measurements
Noise measurements were also taken, so road traffic noise was additionally investigated. The noise measurements were carried out in the autumn of 2021 in the area of Hoog Kortrijk and Kortrijk-Oost. This at 39 measuring points.
In the area around Hoog Kortrijk and Kortrijk-Oost (Kortrijk, Harelbeke and Zwevegem territory), any bottlenecks with regard to air quality can be identified and possible actions can be taken.
Result
The NO 2 annual averages for the various measurement locations for the calendar year 2022:
- Varies between 13 and 28 μg/m³.
- All measuring points comply with the current European annual limit value of 40 μg/m³,
- No measuring point meets the World Health Organization's advisory value (10 μg/m³).
- Six measuring points exceed the currently proposed future EU annual limit value of 20 μg/m³: Five along access roads to Kortrijk (Condédreef, N50 Doorniksesteenweg and N8 Oudenaardsesteenweg), the sixth next to the E17 motorway at the end of Beeklaan.
