CityTRAQ: Developing a sustainable measuring network and drawing up an air quality action plan

The City of Bruges is committed to the further development of a sustainable measuring network throughout the city. Through traffic counts with smart cameras at a number of mobility hubs, the City monitors the various modes of transport and links these to air quality measurements (fine dust, nitrogen dioxide, ozone). We then simulate the effect of various measures that improve air quality on the mobility network. In this way, the impact of the modal shift, one-way traffic or a school street can be examined. Using these tools, the city will draw up a substantiated air quality action plan with concrete actions to improve local air quality in the coming years.

You tackle the following challenges:

How do I make my environment more aware of air quality
How do I limit vehicle emissions

Measurement setup

For 2 years, the city of Bruges will roll out a measuring network with multiparameter sensors to monitor fine dust (PM2.5), NO2 and O3 (July 2024-July 2026). At 18 locations on the Bruges territory, it will be investigated how these air quality parameters fluctuate throughout the day and the year. In addition, mobility cameras will be placed at several junctions near the multiparameter sensors so that the measurements can be linked to the air quality measurements. Based on these measurement results, the impact of the various measures will be simulated, via a tool developed by the VMM, in order to develop an air quality action plan. The impact of these measures will also be monitored in real time by the measuring network.
