Counting frames

If a city or municipality wants to tackle mobility and traffic safety together with its residents, it is necessary to gain insight into the existing situation. Residents can do this via an abacus. With the support of the municipality or the city, residents for an abacus can receive better support in their residential area.

You tackle the following challenges:

How do I make my environment more aware of air quality
How do I structurally put air quality on the agenda of my organisation

What is Telraam?

This counting frame counts the traffic in your street and gives you a better view of the local traffic in your street through a count. This way, you as a citizen gain more control over the local mobility policy with your measurement. The measurements you make are essential data for the safety in your street, the nuisance, the noise and also the air quality. These measurements and therefore also the data are very useful and fit in citizen science.

Abacus as citizen science

Telraam develops high-tech measuring equipment that can be used by citizens - with or without the support of their own city or municipality - to measure. It provides for the measurement of continuous, reliable and standardised data. The participating citizens are supported in their approach to their own measurement of traffic in their street. All measurements are collected and made available on a public website, for policymakers, for research but also for any interested citizen.

How does Telraam work?

The Telraam measuring device is a combination of a microcomputer, sensors and a low-resolution camera. The measuring device only needs electricity and you mount it on the inside of a window with a view of the street. It is robust, reliable and works completely autonomously thanks to the built-in mobile data connection and the tools for remote device management.

The city of Ghent has done a comparative study between the counting loops and the Telraam sensor 2.0. More information about this can be found in the report below.
