General information

A citizen monitoring network for particulate matter is being set up in Lent by the Air Quality working group of the Lent district council. The working group works together with the municipality of Nijmegen, which supports this project and has added an extra location to the municipal monitoring network (Osiris sensors). The direct reason for the monitoring network is the nuisance experienced by residents living in the vicinity of the busy N325. Driving here is often too fast. The working group wants to get a better picture of the degree of air pollution caused by the road. There are also concerns about air quality on the south side of Lent. In this area, many houses are being built on the dikes, close to the busy river Waal.

In the first phase (May 2021), 10 particulate matter meters were installed, including at the Citadel college. For the second phase, an extension to 20 meters is being considered. The intention is to measure with a high time resolution and to spread the meters evenly over Lent. With this, the working group hopes to discover patterns in the measurement data that can be traced back to the above-mentioned local sources, so that targeted measures can be taken. The data from the meters are also used when preparing profile papers at the Citadel College and in specialization projects of HAN Engineering students. The data is combined with both the measurement data from the municipality and the reference stations of the RIVM. The project will take at least two years.

About the particulate matter meter

The Ohnics OHN-1 is used for this project. This meter measures PM1.0 and PM2.5 with Sensirion's SPS30 particulate matter sensor. The OHN-1 also measures temperature and relative humidity. The measurement data is sent via the mobile network, making installation very easy. The meter sends a rounded GPS position (100m) so that the results can be shown directly on the map . The measurement data can be found on the Measuring Together data portal.
