General information

The Air Club in Rotterdam started in April 2021. For this project, city residents use a sensor to measure particulate matter concentrations in the air themselves. Rotterdam has already worked hard in recent years to improve the air quality in the city, but it remains important to map sources of pollution. This Citizen Science project will help with that.

Particulate matter measurements distributed across the city

The sensors are distributed over the 14 urban areas of Rotterdam. These are: Rotterdam Center, Charlois, Delfshaven, Feijenoord, Pernis, Hillegersberg-Schiebroek, Hoek van Holland, Hoogvliet, IJsselmonde, Kralingen-Crooswijk, Noord, Overschie, Prins Alexander and Rozenburg.
Members of the Luchtclub will measure PM2.5 over the next two years with the Sensirion SPS30 sensor. There will also be a 'super unit' for each area. This measuring box contains the Sensirion SPS30, a Nova Fitness SDS011 particulate matter meter and an Alphasense sensor for measuring NO2. Members of the Air Club may decide for themselves at which public location this super unit will be placed.

Sharing knowledge and experience in the field of air quality

In addition to measuring the local air quality, the aim of the Air Club is also to share knowledge and experiences with each other. The Air Club organizes knowledge sessions in which participants can learn more about the operation of sensors, air quality, data and measurement.

Collaboration

The Luchtclub is a collaboration of various parties. The sensor network connects to the official measurement network of the municipality, with which the DCMR Rijnmond Environmental Service has been measuring air quality for fifty years. The sensor measurements provide a more detailed picture, and can be viewed on the Samen Meten data portal . The DCMR carries out the final analysis of the data in collaboration with RIVM. In addition, the GGD and the company SODAQ are also involved in the Air Club.

Clean Air Agree

On January 13, 2020, Rotterdam signed the Clean Air Agreement (SLA), thereby joining the government and about 80 other provinces and municipalities. All streets in Rotterdam now meet European air quality standards, but the ambition is to meet the stricter standards of the World Health Organization (WHO) by 2025 at the latest.
