Motivate your environment to take the bike
If you replace the car with a bicycle for short distances, the air quality and your own health improve.
You tackle the following challenges:
That's how you do it
More than half of the people who live less than five kilometers from their work use their car to travel. There is therefore still a lot of potential to increase bicycle use.
As a government, you can make bicycle use more attractive with measures such as:
- build safe and comfortable bike paths,
- provide sufficient (free) bicycle sheds,
- improve the traffic flow for cyclists,
- implement bicycle rental systems.
Tips
The Flemish Department of Mobility and Public Works developed a vade mecum for bicycle facilities . This includes design guidelines for bicycle facilities such as bicycle paths and bicycle sheds.
For questions about bicycle policy, you can contact the Provincial Support Center for Bicycles.

- Construction of cycle paths separated from other road traffic
- Adapted traffic lights (green wave for cyclists, simultaneously green for cyclists in all directions)
- ...
