General information
The first pilot for self-measurement of air quality took place in Rotterdam at the beginning of 2017. In various places in the city, residents showed interest in taking air measurements, or had already started taking measurements. The aim of the province was, and is, to improve the dialogue with citizens, to increase awareness and to offer perspective for action. After the pilot in Rotterdam, the measurement project was scaled up. There are currently sensors at “measuring clubs” in six municipalities in South Holland:
- Bodegraven-Reeuwijk
- Gouda
- Lansingerland
- Leidschendam-Voorburg
- Rotterdam ( City Lab Air Quality )
- Waddinxveen
Sensors
In the first pilot phase, citizen scientists used the so-called “RIVM mushroom” to take measurements. The gray “box” was introduced in mid-2019 to replace the mushroom. The mushroom contained both a NO 2 - (Alphasense NO 2 -B43F) and a particulate matter meter (Shinyei PPD42). Because the results of the NO2 sensor in the summer turned out to be not very reliable, and because calibration took a lot of time, it was not included in the gray boxes. The new kit now includes the SDS011 particulate matter sensor. Individual Palmes tubes have so far proven to be the most reliable for measuring nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) themselves. In addition to the mushrooms, gray boxes and Palmes tubes, the province has also provided Luftdaten kits.
