Measuring together is knowing in the Municipality of Eersel

Particulate matter and noise have been measured in the Municipality of Eersel for several years now. The residents have organized this together with the Municipality of Eersel and maintain contact through a sounding board group. The citizen measurement project fits in well with other initiatives in the region, such as the Sounding Board Group Eersel – Eindhoven Airport and the ILM2.0 in Eindhoven.

Particulate matter and noise measurements

Residents of the Municipality of Eersel have been measuring particulate matter and noise since 2018. The reason for this was the desire for more insight into the air quality and quality of life in the region. Residents experience noise nuisance caused by aircraft flying over to and from Eindhoven Airport. In addition, there is also a lot of car traffic in the area, including the A-67 and the N397. In order to gain more insight into the local situation, residents decided to start measuring themselves and the 'Measuring Sounding Board Group' was established. The project measures noise levels, PM 10 and PM 2.5 .

Development of the project

The project started with nine Intemo measuring boxes, spread over the six church villages that make up the Municipality of Eersel. The residents were given a sensor connected to the smartphone. After a year and a half of measuring, the Sounding Board Group on Measurement decided that these sensors were not reliable enough. They then switched to Civity's sniffer bicycle cabinets, and since then twelve sniffer bicycles have been driving around in the municipality. In the meantime Intemo has also improved its measuring cabinets. These are now equipped with the Nova Fitness SDS011 particulate matter sensor and equipped with better communication.

Data visualization and analysis

A portal has been developed to provide insight into the collected data. On this you can view the data and you can follow the degree of air pollution and the noise levels. You can view the data of the sniffer bikes on the Civity portal . The sensor measurements will also soon be available on the Meten Together data portal. The Measuring Sounding Board Group has recently started analyzing the sensor data, but it is proving difficult to interpret this. The RIVM and the GGD therefore offer support in this regard.

Practical example of Citizen Science

The measurement project in Eersel is characterized by the collaboration between the residents and the Municipality of Eersel. The Sounding Board Group is composed of representatives of the six parishes, who are often also members of the Village Council. There are short lines, there is frequent communication and grateful use is made of the expertise of the members of the Sounding Board (members are, for example, employed by companies such as ASML and DAF). All this makes the measurement project in Eersel a good practical example of Citizen Science. “ Life is becoming healthier in the Kempen country ” Cees Beemer, chairman of the Sounding Board Group Measurement.

Connection with regional measurement networks

The measurement project in Eersel is connected to the Sounding Board Group Eersel – Eindhoven Airport, which focuses on the problem of noise nuisance and air pollution at Eindhoven Airport. In addition, the measurement network in Eersel can become part of the second measurement layer of the ILM2.0 in and around Eindhoven. The aim of the measurements in Eersel and the surrounding region is ultimately to reduce noise nuisance and air pollution, resulting in a better quality of life, and most importantly: health benefits.
