Provide shore power for ships

Ships often make their own electricity with heavy generators. You can reduce those emissions with shore power — a connection to the onshore electricity grid.
Provide shore power for ships

You tackle the following challenges:

How do I expose myself less to harmful substances
How do I limit vehicle emissions

That's how you do it

In Flanders you can request an energy scan of your ship. The aim of the Flemish government is to stimulate shore-side electricity.

When ships berth in a port, most rely on their own diesel engines running on fuel oil for their electricity. This causes a lot of air pollution and fine dust. If moored ships can plug into the onshore electricity grid, you will severely limit the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), nitrogen oxide (NO x ), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and particulate matter. Since inland vessels often moor near residential areas, this also reduces noise pollution.

In the Netherlands, this principle has been included in the plan to reduce NO2 . Ships receive quay power (shore power) in the port at a price that is equal to or lower than the self-generated power on board. This subsidy for the realization of shore power for maritime shipping will run between 2021 and 2023 for at least five projects.
