Through traffic and cut-through traffic is often the cause of a lot of air pollution in bottleneck streets. Possible reasons for this are inadequate signage, the lack of alternative routes, too many detour kilometers or loss of time via the alternative routes. To remedy this, the most appropriate measure depends on the concrete situation. A few possibilities:
- improving traffic flow on alternative routes,
- better signalling,
- introduction of entry bans or traffic locks.
Tips
When introducing a measure, it is best to take the following into account:
- Does this create bottlenecks at other locations?
- will this result in more kilometers being driven, with a possible negative impact on the climate?
- When you discourage car traffic, certain locations can be reached faster by bicycle. The result: a modal shift with a positive effect on the climate.

Loop System
This prevents through traffic in a certain area, such as the city center. A city then consists of sub-areas that are not or hardly accessible to traffic. Via a loop around those sub-areas, the approach road that gives access to the sub-area is chosen.
Locks
Roads are only accessible to certain road users. Poles close off roads for cars, trucks and buses, concrete blocks ensure that a country road is only accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and tractors.
